Is a baby nest safe? What you should know before using one
Many parents ask us if we have nests for newborns — and the truth is that we do not work with this type of product.
Not because of difficulty, but for safety reasons.
Over the years, we have always had doubts about using nests for babies to sleep in. And, when looking for information from credible sources, we realized those doubts make sense.
What is a newborn nest?
Also known as baby pods, nests are a small “cocoon” with a padded base and surrounding sides.
👉 The idea is to recreate the comfort of the mother's womb.
But is it safe for sleeping?
What experts say
Organizations like The Lullaby Trust in the UK are clear:
👉 Babies should sleep on a firm, flat surface.
Nests, being soft and enveloping:
- do not guarantee that firmness
- can increase the risk of suffocation
- can make breathing difficult in certain positions
Studies on the risk
A study in the United States showed that:
👉 soft surfaces increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by up to 5 times
Additionally:
- the baby’s head can sink in
- ventilation can be compromised
So, should I use nests for newborns?
👉 Our position is clear:
We do not recommend using nests.
If you still choose to use one:
- choose a certified product
- ensure the mattress is firm
- constantly check your baby’s position
Essential care for safe sleep
✔️ Firm and flat surface (crib or bassinet)
