The 2007 European law - EN 12586:2007:

EN 12586:2007 is a European standard that specifies the safety requirements and testing methods for chains, ribbons, or cords used to hold pacifiers. The standard's main objective is to ensure product safety by minimizing the risk of strangulation, suffocation, and other accidents that may occur during use.

Main points of the standard:

1. Dimensions and Length :

   • Sets limits on the maximum length of chains or cords to avoid the risk of strangulation.

2. Materials :

   • Specifies the types of materials that can be used, ensuring they are safe, durable, and do not pose a risk of toxicity to children.

3. Connection :

   • Requirements for the mechanism that connects the pacifier to the chain, ensuring it is safe and strong.

4. Mechanical Resistance :

   • Tests to verify that the product is strong enough and will not break or come loose under reasonable stress.

5. Chemical Properties :

   • Limiting hazardous chemicals in materials, such as phthalates or heavy metals.

6. Labeling and Consumer Information :

   • Requires the product to have clear instructions for use and warnings about potential risks.

Long ribbon bibs may seem practical, but it's important to be aware of the risks. Long ribbons or strings can pose a strangulation hazard to babies, especially when used unsupervised or while sleeping. Additionally, unsuitable or poorly prepared materials can cause irritation or even poisoning.
