What is the pillowcase in crib sheet sets for?

Pillowcases are more important than you think and make your life easier!

A very common question among mothers is about the pillowcase that comes in crib sheet sets. After all, babies up to 24 months should not use a pillow, so what is the pillowcase for?

The answer is simple: the main function of pillowcases is to protect the area where the baby rests their little head. This area should be cleaned every day because it has the most contact with sweat, milk that may be dribbled, or even small regurgitations.

Changing the bottom sheet daily would be quite laborious and impractical. The pillowcase makes this care much easier since it can be quickly replaced, keeping the crib always clean and comfortable.

It’s normal for mothers to wonder: “But if the sheet set only comes with one pillowcase, what do I do?”

There are two practical solutions:

  1. Buy extra pillowcases separately so you can alternate daily without worry.

  2. Use a cloth diaper or a soft knit over the sheet, serving the same purpose as the pillowcase — easy to remove, wash, and reuse.

Conclusion:

Pillowcases are therefore a very useful accessory even if babies don’t use pillows. It’s a practical way to keep the most sensitive area of the crib always clean without needing to change the entire sheet every day.

👶 Up to 12 months
The use of pillows, duvets, thick blankets, or stuffed animals in the crib is not recommended. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) warns that these items increase the risk of suffocation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

🍼 From 1 year old
Even after the first birthday, if you choose to introduce a pillow, it should be thin and firm. This avoids neck strain and ensures freedom of movement during sleep.

🌙 Between 2 and 3 years old
Most pediatricians recommend introducing a pillow only at this stage. At this age, the child has better body control and can adjust the position of the head and torso independently.

Signs it might be time to buy a pillow:

  • Your child starts resting their head on stuffed animals or soft objects.

  • They prefer to sleep on their side or stomach.

  • They wake up with some neck discomfort.

👉 Every child is unique! The most important thing is always to ensure safe and comfortable sleep, adapting the environment to your baby’s needs.
