Are blankets safe for babies?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping the cot free of blankets, pillows, toys, and other items until the baby is 12 months old.
These objects can pose a suffocation risk and increase the likelihood of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
When the baby reaches 1 year of age, the AAP considers that the risk of SIDS is no longer a threat!
At that point, you can start using a blanket to cover the baby.
However, keep in mind that young children tend to move around a lot while sleeping and may not be able to reposition blankets until they are about 18 to 24 months old.
Even so, opt for a blanket that is not too large or bulky.
"We have seen more adventurous children pile up blankets to use them as steps to climb out of the cot," warn sleep specialists from Dream Team Baby!
Furthermore, it is safe to assume that any used blanket may end up in the baby's mouth, especially during the teething phase.
Therefore, choose a blanket that is easy to wash, without tassels or fur, to ensure your little one's safety and comfort.
