Are blankets safe for babies?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping the crib free of blankets, pillows, toys, and other items until your baby is 12 months old.
These objects can pose a choking hazard and increase the likelihood of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Once a baby reaches 1 year of age, the AAP considers the risk of SIDS to no longer be a threat!
At this point, you can start using a blanket to cover the baby.
However, keep in mind that young children tend to move around a lot while sleeping and may not be able to reposition their blankets until around 18 to 24 months of age.
Still, choose a blanket that isn't too big or bulky.
"We've seen more adventurous toddlers pile up blankets and use them as steps to get out of the crib," warn sleep experts at Dream Team Baby!
Additionally, it is safe to assume that any used blanket could end up in a baby's mouth, especially during the teething phase.
Therefore, choose a blanket that is easy to wash, without tassels or fur, to ensure the safety and comfort of your little one.
